Lyrics:

Well, I’m a-sitting on the cusp of a valve, I am,
A vegetative bacterium
Well I’m a-watching all the cells in the blood go by
Oh, how I wish I could embolise. Hit it…

I feel like a change of scene
A trip round the liver, maybe the spleen
I’ll avoid the Kupfer cells, leucocytes too
Well, if you were my size, wouldn’t you do too

Well, I’m a-sitting…

How I’d love to diapedese
The white cells do it with so much ease
Breezin’ up and down the tissue planes,
They go in a lymphatic and out of a vein, yeah!

Well, I’m a-sitting…

Well, man what a beat,
A Melsey an Lis
A toucan
And so can three, yeah
A hot cappuchini
I’m teenie weenie weenie
A Theo, Rio, Trio
Babba doo bang, baby!

If I don’t move fast I’m gonna end my days
As a morsel for a polymorph or macrophage
If they don’t take me Penicillin will
But they haven’t got me yet and that’s why
I’m still…you guessed…

Sitting on the cusp of a valve, I am,
A vegetative bacterium
Well, I’m a-watching all the cells in the blood go by
Oh, how I wish I could embolise / Take it away!

How I wish, how I wish
how I wish, oh, how I wish
How I wish, how I wish
How I wish for a wonderful life
Yeah!
Oh yeah.

Vij’s notes:

‘Subacute Bacterial Blues’ looks at the world from the viewpoint of a bacterium that has infected a heart valve. The bug yearns to explore the world beyond the aortic cusps – if only it could embolise.

A little background information: Infection of the lining of the heart valves is called ‘subacute bacterial endocarditis’.
Kupfer cells, leucocytes (white cells), polymorphs and macrophages are blood cells that kill and digest infectious organisms.
The term ’embolism’ is used when blood clots, bacteria, cells or foreign bodies are carried from one part of the circulation to another. Diapedesis is the process by which white cells insinuate themselves between, and pass through, the cells of capillary walls.
Veins carry blood back to the heart, whereas lymph vessels carry excess water, and other molecules that have seeped through the capillaries, back into the veins.

The song gives an affectionate nod to a famous singer/trumpet player, and also to the iconic music of the 1967 film ‘The Jungle Book’.
