Music & lyrics by Vij Sodera

Sooni sooni raatdh  [Silent night]
Subcuch shant ha  [Everything is peaceful]

Silent night
Holy night
All is calm
All is bright
The star in the sky declares from On High
That God and man can be reconciled
Holy Child
Tender and mild
Sleeps in heavenly peace

He will be great
Son of the Most High
He will be holy, the Morning Star
He will be Saviour
The guiding Light
And He will be King with
All power and glory
This the angel declared to all mankind
His name shall be Jesus, Emmanuel
He shall REIGN
In glory for all time
And of His kingdom there will be no end

Sleep in heavenly peace

Vij’s notes:

This is a song about God’s declaration (through the angel Gabriel) that Mary would give birth to a Baby who would grow up to be the Saviour of mankind.
The song starts with cicadas, a sitar and Punjabi lyrics to give the song an eastern feel.
The video then depicts the journey of Joseph and Mary from Nazareth, through Jerusalem, to Bethlehem. First there is a panoramic view of the hill of Nazareth and the valley to the south. Then there is a view of the Western Wall in Jerusalem, followed by trees in the Garden of Gethsemane, and some tombs in the nearby Kidron Valley. The route southwards leads to Bethlehem.

The old song ‘Silent Night’ is in 3/4 time. Here the song is played in 4/4 time with some additional lyrics.
The gentle introduction leads onto the angel Gabriel’s powerful statement that the Baby in the manger will not remain a helpless baby but will grow to become King and Saviour. At the same time, the scene shifts to the Sea of Galilee (Lake Kinneret), where Jesus demonstrated that He was the Messiah by doing many miracles.
After the dynamic crescendo relating to Jesus reigning in glory, the music drops down to simple voice with gentle percussion. The outro then develops momentum and ends with both the Baby sleeping and the King reigning for all time, and fades out to the sound of cicadas in the night.
Since the birth of Jesus was in the Middle East, and not in mid-winter*, there are no jingle bells and there is no reference to snow. The bulk of the video was filmed in Israel.

*It is almost certain that Jesus was not born on 25th December. By referring to Luke, 2 Chronicles, and the writings of Josephus, it can be established that Jesus was most likely born sometime in the autumn.
The date of 25th December is of no Christian relevance whatsoever, and simply reflects an unbiblical association of an ancient pagan winter festival.
